Through the many months of pregnancy and even before that, we've done a lot of thinking and talking about, "what's it going to be like to be a family of four?" Declan can be quite a handful now as he's being a proper toddler and "asserting his independence" and "defining himself separate from his parents." When we thought back on when Declan was an infant and how he somehow managed to keep us quite busy despite the fact that he didn't do much besides eat, sleep, and poo.
So far, it's been pretty much a cakewalk. Jen still doesn't have complete mobility, but then we're used to that as she's pretty much the same as the last few months of pregnancy. Gavin truly does sleep 23 hours a day like they say, and during the day he's generally fine with sleeping whereever we put him. Sometimes he wants to be carried but he's so light that's no big deal. And we no longer have illusions about infants being particularly fragile so we can shift our hold on him as needed to accomplish whatever it is we need to do.
Declan is great with Gavin. He won't say his name yet but proudly proclaims "BABY" many, many times throughout the day and likes helping out with him. He's generally very gentle with him except when he occasionally gets over-excited.
Strangely Gavin seems the most figity at night. Declan loved being swaddled but Gavin seems to prefer his space. And yet if we put him in the bassinet at night, he pretty much squirms and fusses until we pick him up. If we put him in bed with us, he's mostly a happy camper... but we're trying to avoid that (long discussion...). We all still manage to sleep pretty good most nights and just like with Declan, even if I don't sleep as much as I'd like, it doesn't seem to affect me much the next day.
We're beginning to get back into our routines except for various oddities from trying to re-do the basement (demolition started yesterday) and put a closet into Gavin's room.
So, things are pretty much peachy. Gavin seems to be getting a bit fussier lately and things may of course change drastically, but so far, we're all adjusting nicely and excited to delve further into being a family of four.
