Used to be, Declan would wake up around 5 or 6 AM every morning, I'd go get him, bring him to our bed and Jen would feed him and we'd all go back to sleep until 7:30 or so... Not sure whether it's because it's getting light so much earlier or that he's just older, but he's stopped going back to sleep now. And so the last couple mornings, Declan and I have been getting up early... and it's the best thing I've done in a long time.

Yesterday, we went for a bike ride around Forest Park, which I haven't done in a surprisingly long time. Today, we went hiking in the amazing Oak Savanna in Forest Park and then went to the Market in the Loop and stocked up on fresh fruit. Declan eats an amazing amount of fruit. We go through a cantalope, a pineapple, a big bag of grapes, and lots more every 4 days or so.

Walking through the savanna this morning reminded me of my mornings when I used to work at Miniwanca and how much I miss it. I just feel so much more connected and balanced when I'm there; spending all day every day outdoors, exercising constantly, interacting with and leading groups of open-minded folks who question everything, discussing philosophy and spirituality and the true meat of life. To be able to spend two months a year in that world was such a blessing. It grounded me and gave me a chance to see my life from another perspective and examine my path.

Our friend Tony was kind enough to invite us, and a bunch of other folks, out to his families ranch last weekend for barn dancing, gun shootin, hiking, horseback riding, and good ol' R&R. We had a blast. Declan was his usual good-natured, layed-back self and was a big hit with everyone.

Tony and his family were amazing hosts. They took care of pretty much everything, cooking, cleaning up, DJs, and playing tour guides to the whole crew. The crowd came from all over, Chicago, Crystal City, St. Louis, ...

Jen shot a gun for the first time (and liked it a little too much), we both shot skeet for the first time (I hit one on my first try), and Declan had more firsts than could possibly be listed...

I've changed the software I use for my Photo Gallery to a free, open-source, php based program called Gallery. It's a huge improvement over the old software. I've also add a bunch more pics of Declan and other stuff.   Read More...

Around a year ago, I mentioned that I believed The Daily Show was the best news show out there (which is sad since it's comedy)... and here's a study that shows that Daily Show viewers are indeed the most informed.

And while I find that somewhat vindicating, it's just really sad that a comedy show does a better job at informing it's viewers than any of the news programs out there.

"We should spend less time ranking children and more time helping them to identify their natural competencies and gifts, and cultivate those. There are hundreds and hundreds of ways to succeed, and many, many different abilities that will help you get there." - Howard Gartner

The above quote comes from a book my brother game me called, Emotional Intelligence: Why it can matter more than IQ.

Many of the most successful people (whether you measure financially or in terms of happiness and/or relationships), weren't very good students. IQ has only a 20% correlation to financial success and very little correlation to other success measurements.

Our culture can be so narrowly focused and while certainly it makes sense to make sure kids are proficient readers and capable thinkers, our new testing obsessed approach imposes an overly narrow focus in our approach to education.

So, Edge.org asked 120 scientist to state one thing they believe in but can't prove. To me, there are some truly fascinating concepts.

One of my favorites:
I believe that consciousness and its contents are all that exists. Space-time, matter and fields never were the fundamental denizens of the universe but have always been, from their beginning, among the humbler contents of consciousness, dependent on it for their very being.

So I do this thing called Philosophical Cafe whenever I get a chance. It's led by a Webster University professor and is run as a simple discussion. If you're interested, let me know and I'll keep you up to date on when it's happening... anywho, here's some thoughts from tonights discussion...   Read More...

Where do I go when I want in-depth, insightful, unbiased information in politics? The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. In fact, it's gotten to the point where I don't feel like I can trust anyone else. Everyone else seems biased, they follow the wrong things, they don't really analyze, and I never learn anything new... What's really shocking is it seems I'm not alone on this, the daily show is getting a lot of respect...   Read More...

For years I've been trying to figure out this whole "bustin a sag" thing (aka by the man, "low slung pants"). To me it looks stupid, uncomfortable, and annoying as one has to constantly pull his pants up... but then today, as I was riding my bike, it finally hit me... it's Urkel's fault.   Read More...
